by Marc Lathuillière January 30 - February 06, 2010
Marc Lathuillière, the French lensman behind "France Face Lost," will hold a free workshop from 10am to 3pm at Silverlens Gallery on January 30 and February 6 sponsored by Alliance Française, followed by an artist’s talk at Silverlens on February 6 at 6pm to introduce his work and artistic approach.
Dealing with French identity and observing France after an extended stay in Asia, Lathuillière questions the stereotypes on which we build our identities with his use of masks. From Provence to Normandy, and from Bordeaux to Metz, more than four hundred people have already let him take their "de-faced" portraits.
THE WORKSHOP
Day 1, 10am-3pm (5 hrs): From Psychological to Masked Portrait
Participants are invited to bring national costumes (Maria Clara, terno, barong, malong, etc.) and examples of their photographic works, either printed or on a USB flash drive. This session will be spent mostly in the studio.
Day 2, 10am-3pm (5 hrs): From Masked to Contextual Portrait
This second session will be spent mostly outdoors. Participants are invited to bring their own mask. It would be helpful if those who have their own laptops could bring them to the session.
Feb 06, Saturday, 6pm: Artist Talk
“How is it possible to take pictures of the other, whether as a local or a foreigner? What can photography tell us about identity construction? Here are the questions I intend to raise with this Unmasking.”
- Marc Lathuillière
APPLICATION PROCESS

"France Face Lost" by Marc Lathuilliere February 02 - February 25, 2010
Marc Lathuilliere's exhibition entitled "France Face Lost" deals with French identity. It is the questioning of a visual artist looking at his homeland as if it wasn't. As if he was a tourist from fast moving Asia discovering the clichés and strangeness of a sleeping beauty named France.
Marc Lathuilliere first experienced this swing in perception in 2004, after extended stays in Asia, mostly in Thailand and South Korea. Coming back home, he realized how deeply French identity is anchored in the past, and the tremendous efforts French People devote to the preservation of its heritage. Through his "asianized" eyes, France now seemed estranged: he started to observe it with both wonder and worry.
To express these mixed feelings, he asked the French he met all over the country to wear a mask, always the same one, and then he took a portrait of them. An interactive game that froze them, shedding a new and doubtful light on their daily surroundings-architecture, sceneries, furniture… - , questioning the stereotypes on which we build our identities.
In five years, from Provence to Normandy, and from Bordeaux to Metz, more than four hundred people have already let him take their "de-faced" portrait.
Marc Lathuillière’s exhibition of photographs ‘’France Face Lost’’ opens at the Alliance Française Total Gallery on Tuesday, February 2, 2010, with cocktails at 6:30 pm. It will be on exhibit until February 25, 2010.

December 3 - December 6, 2009
Entering its fifth season, PULSE Contemporary Art Fair will move to Miami's Ice Palace this December with an expanded presentation of international galleries and programming. After a successful run at PULSE NY in the Spring, this Fall, the Philippines will be represented at PULSE Miami by Silverlens Gallery’s artists, Gary-Ross Pastrana, Hanna Pettyjohn, Rachel Rillo, and Steve Tirona.
Pastrana will be showing his acrylic on paper collage series 'Set V GAME,' as well as the last paper collage set, the first of which are currently on show at the Singapore Art Museum’s Philippine show 'Thrice Upon a Time.' Rillo has her 'Houses,' photographs that bounce between meaning and material. Joining the group is Pettyjohn’s large-scale paintings of a time of alienation and self-discovery in 'The American Sweet.' Rounding the stellar selection are Steve Tirona’s 'Imelda Collection,' which have shown famously in Manila, Hong Kong, New York, and are making their debut in Miami at PULSE.
A highlight of the new PULSE venue is its enhanced platform for their signature programming series, including the launch of a new performance program featuring daily outdoor concerts. PULSE Miami will be held on Thursday, December 3 through Sunday, December 6, 2009. The fair will run concurrently with Art Basel Miami Beach.
The Miami debut of PULSE Performance will feature daily performances and concerts by young emerging artists such as Maria Jose Arjona, whose performances will be among the highlights of the new programming. The Vivian Girls, The Blow, and Exene Cervenka are some of the more notable musical talents in the outdoor concert and performance series.
Additionally, PULSE will present its signature program of large-scale sculptures and installations throughout the fair's exhibition halls and lawn, as well as the PULSE Play> video lounge curated by João Ribas.
Each year, one artist featured in IMPULSE, the section of the fair dedicated to solo artist presentations, is awarded a $2,500 cash prize. This year's PULSE Prize will be awarded in honor of Adriaan van der Have, Founder and Director of Torch Gallery, who was an inspiring force in the art world for his dedication to the promotion of emerging artists. The winner will be announced Friday, December 4, 2009 during the PULSE Party at PLUNGE at the Gansevoort South.

Paris, France September 22 - November 22, 2009
Photographer, Jake Verzosa represents the Philippines in Photoquai in Paris, joining 50 photographers from 32 countries.
"Silverlens Gallery presented a range of Philippine photographers' portfolios and curator Tadashi Ono chose Jake," says Isa Lorenzo, co-owner of Silverlens, of the selection process. Verzosa was then flown to Paris for the opening so he could see for himself how his work was exhibited along the Seine riverbanks, alongside the Musee du Quai Branly, from September 22 to November 22, 2009.
Verzosa will be part of the second edition of Photoquai, which features the work of 50 contemporary photographers from around the world, unknown photographic talents in European terms, who come from the major geographical areas represented in the collections of the Musee du quai Branly: South America and Latin America, North America, Asia, Oceania, Africa and the Near and Middle East. The goal of the project is to exhibit non-western photography, unveil other current views on the world, and give an account of the diversity of ways in which the non-western world is perceived today by artists who are actually living within the geographic landscape that they’ve chosen to capture. Happening every two years, the exhibition on the quai Branly is an international event known for its quality, originality and timely relevance.
About the Photoquai Created in 2007 by the musée du quai Branly and dedicated to non-western photography, Photoquai, the Biennial exhibition of world images, takes place from September 22 to November 22 on the quai Branly, opposite the museum and in partnership with several cultural institutions.
This year, Photoquai continues to pursue its fundamental mission: to highlight artists whose work is previously unexhibited or little known in Europe, to foster exchanges and the exchanging of views on the world. The 2009 edition is committed to ensuring continuity between the exhibitions on the riverbanks at the musee du quai Branly and the temporary exhibitions present inside the musee du quai Branly and at the Pavillon des Sessions - its annexe at the Louvre - as well as in partner establishments.

December 11, 2009 - January 09, 2010
On December 11 to January 9, select works from the Singapore International Photography Festival (SIPF) 2008 will travel to Manila for a month-long exhibition.
SIPF satellite partner, Silverlens Gallery, hosts the visual feast for the Filipino community, providing extended exposure for the select SIPF 2008 photographers.
The SIPF is a biennial gathering of minds from around the world with the common pursuit of advancing the art and appreciation of photography. The 2008 SIPF hosted juried exhibitions, workshops, and portfolio reviews. Isa Lorenzo, Silverlens Creative Director was one of the panelists of SIPF 2008, participating in the portfolio critiques, as well as giving a talk on Collecting Photography. “This exhibition at Silverlens is a selection of work from the juried shows. We are happy to be part of this network that shows interesting and powerful photography," Lorenzo says. On a broader scale, SIPF presents a key platform to discover, nurture and propel Southeast Asian photographers onto the international stage.
"Among the many objects that surround us, a small photograph could be the most amazing object. It carries you away, it touches you, teleporting you in time, through memory and imagination," says Terence Yeung, Curator of SIPF 2008.

A workshop about photography's main tool: its origin and evolution, and the different types it has evolved into.
A discussion on what the Classic Camera was, before it had become another computer peripheral.
An in-depth course on how the Camera works, its parts, and its application.
A lot of Photography Courses now claim to be not equipment centered. Celebrating the equipment seems to have become a "shameful" aspect now- but at the same time many of these courses rely on the fact that Photography has become easier to teach when the cameras used both provide do-it-all automation and instant gratification.... Rangefinder Filipinas believe that the first step towards making meaningful and relevant photography is through mastery of the main tool first.
And the emphasis is on the CLASSIC. The celebration and use of the tools from simpler times.
About RANGEFINDER FILIPINAS
Rangefinder Filipinas, started in 2006, is a community of classic film photography enthusiasts whose main tool is the rangefinder camera. The group is open to everyone who has a passion for classic photography and learning more about the tools, processes, and understanding how light is used to make a timeless photograph.
